HCM for SMBs may be the most fluid category in a very fluid industry. Because of the benefits component, there’s a ton of revenue out there for companies to grab. Expect more companies to go out there and grab it. And expect more investors to flood into the market.

There’s a surprising amount of greenfield opportunity in this segment — companies that are jumping into HR technology for the first time. Buyers will make mistakes. They’ll choose startup vendors that overpromise and underdeliver. Legacy vendors will make mistakes, too. They’ll “play it safe” and never realize that there’s nothing safe about that strategy. And there will be investors who make mistakes and will kick themselves a decade from now over what might have been.
